The study was undertaken collaboratively by the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University and twelve industrial collaborators. The lead industrial partner was AMEC, with eleven further collaborators representing construction industry supplier and sub-contracting organisations. They were: Briggs Roofing and Cladding; Colt International; Crown House Engineering; E-Squared; Environmental Air Contracts; Galloway Group (Northern); Hathaway Roofing; Hilton Building Services; Honeywell; MSS Clean Technology; Senior Hargreaves.

The research was funded under the Link IDAC programme of the EPSRC and DTI. This is a £10 million specialised research programme on Integration in Design and Construction which was launched in June 1994 as part of the Innovative Manufacturing Initiative (IMI).
